Job fit is something that often gets overlooked when applying for a job and working towards one’s overall career goals. Too many times, especially in older generations, people accept jobs that they are not entirely happy with. If you are going to be spending over 40 hours, five days a week somewhere and possibly years of your life, you need to ensure the job is something that you want to be doing.

The goal of this blog is to inform current students, young grads, and young professionals that you can find the job of your dream without sacrificing your lifestyle.

Below we have laid out a couple of tips for ensuring that you find a job that you are happy to go to every day.

1. PICK A DREAM JOB
  • Having a dream job or an end goal will give you clearer vision of where you want to be 10-15 years down the road.
  • It also allows you to have a better idea of the industry you want to be in.
  • Plus, you can now research jobs that others have held on their path to your dream position.
2. CREATE JOB CRITERIA
  • This is very crucial when selecting whether a job is a good fit or not.
  • For example, if you have five main criteria in which you weight your selection it will make it clear when it comes to selecting offers.
  • Certain criteria could include: pay grade, location of office, hours, dress code, industry fit, commute, benefits, work perks, etc.
  • Rank, in order, what factor is of most importance to you. From here it will be much easier to determine which jobs work for you and which don’t.
3. APPLY TO LOTS OF JOBS, JUST NOT EVERY JOB
  • Once you begin applying for jobs be sure to apply for numerous positions in your field.
  • Do not settle, only apply to jobs within this field.
  • It is here where people often stray toward just applying for jobs they know they can get but they are truly not interested in doing.
  • Unless you could see yourself working the job description listed, every day for at least a year, you need not apply.
  • This is under the assumption that most jobs in your field of studay will fit a lot of your criteria.
4. ATTEND ALL INTERVIEWS

CommPro says that you should be receiving 5-10 interview offers per 100 resumes. Now that you have received interview offers make sure that you are attending all of them. Here are the reasons why:

  • Nothing will give you a better feel for a work environment then driving to the office, seeing people going about their daily tasks, and meeting your potential boss.
  • This will give you an immediate inclination as to whether this job is the right fit for you or not.
  • Real life interview experience is hard to come by so as the saying goes “practice makes perfect.” Who knows, jobs one through three may not be good fits after the interview but by the time you are interviewing for a fourth position you will be a seasoned veteran at interview protocol.
5. MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING
  • We feel it is important to stress to young professionals, that money is not the be all and end all.
  • A thousand dollars may seem like a lot at this point in time but in the grand scheme of things it is not worth your short term sanity.
  • If there is a job that fits your goals and objectives, this is the job you should be looking to take regardless of the pay discrepency.
  • Careers are marathons, jobs are simply miles on the journey. The person who sprints from the start line often will not finish the race, so just because you can make more money now it may not translate to even more money later.
6. HAPPINESS IS THE #1 GOAL
  • As generic as this sounds, being happy in your job is something we should all strive for.
  • There are going to be little things that everyone hates about their job, the important thing is to ensure that the negatives never outweigh the positives.

In summary, set a dream job, creat some criteria for selecting a job, apply to everything in your industry of choice, attend all of your interviews, do accept a job because of money, and finally make sure that you are happy. Working is a part of life that most of us will not be able to avoid, do not look back in fifty years and say that you did something you hated. If you follow some of the tips we have mentioned above, we can guarantee you will have a better chance of finding a job you can love for the next twenty years.
