The Brampton Beast, ECHL affiliate of the Laval Rocket (AHL) and Montreal Canadiens (NHL) hosted a pre-season game this past Saturday at the Powerade Centre against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks. The Golden Hawks are based in Waterloo Ontario and are members of U Sports, Canada’s governing body for University sport. This was the first time the Beast have hosted a pre-season game at the Powerade Centre.
In addition to serving as a final tune up game for the Beast ahead of their home opener this Sunday Oct 15, 2017, the game also served as an opportunity for the crew working behind the scenes to work out any kinks. Through the teams first four seasons, the Beast have prided themselves on having the most entertaining Game Day experience for fans in the GTA. This entertainment has included a pre-game laser show, fan contests, Kids Zone and much more. With a few new faces joining the crew, and plans for some new and innovative entertainment offerings this season, staff were pleased to host the preseason game at the Powerade Centre.
At first glance for many, a Pro team facing off against a University team may seem like an unfair fight, but the two teams competed hard on Saturday, with the Beast coming out as the eventual victors in a 2-1 shootout victory. The ECHL and U Sports are somewhat similar in the sense that many of the best players from major junior leagues such as the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL graduate to playing in the two leagues.
Coming off the most successful season for the Beast in 2016-17 (both on and off the ice) and following a pre-season that saw the Beast go 2-0, the team will regroup in Brampton to prepare for the 2017-18 ECHL season. The Beast begin their journey on the road in Adirondack to face the Thunder, ECHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils, on Saturday October 14th before returning home on Sunday October 15th to host the Manchester Monarchs, ECHL affiliate of the LA Kings.
