Friday, August 24th 2012:Early Saturday morning there was a buzz around Eglinton Flats in Toronto as teams arrived for the first annual Festival of Football Charity Soccer Tournament. The event was created by the Executive Director of the West Park Health Centre Foundation, Mike Fenton, as a way to promote active healthy living and raise money for West Park Health Centre Foundation. With major development plans around 100 million dollars, the Festival of Football event was one way to reach that goal. .
The inaugural Festival of Football 2012 was met with great success, with close to $125,000 raised. The pitches were perfect and the weather was amazing. Approximately 60 teams came ready to compete and enjoy a full day of soccer. Each team participated in 5 games for a grand total of 140 games of soccer in one day. There were close to 600 players participating with many more supporters on the sidelines to enjoy the fun-filled day..
Beyond all of the amazing soccer action, the festival also included live music performances by Jerry Jerome and the Cardells, and Jim Armstrong and the Sonic Deli. But the highlight of the festival for many was the appearances by Canadian Soccer Hall of Famer Craig Forest, and the Olympic bronze medal goal scorer Diana Matheson of the Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team. Both Craig and Diana were in attendance to help promote soccer and this great cause, as well as sign autographs and take pictures with fans..
In a partnership with SDI Marketing and West Park Healthcare Centre Foundation, Cosmos’ key contribution to Festival of Football was helping to recruit teams to take part in the inaugural event. By reaching out to contacts throughout the soccer and corporate community, and getting out in the local neighbourhood, Cosmos was able to recruit an additional 16 teams to take part in event that in turn raised thousands of dollars for the cause. .
Cosmos Sports was proud to be a part of such a remarkable event; both in the planning stages, and to have participated in 5 intense games. We were very pleased to continue developing our relationship with SDI Marketing and to help educate the public about the West Park Healthcare Centre and the great work that they do. .
We would like to thank all the participants, sponsors, and organizers that made this event possible; we hope to work with the Festival of Football and West Park Healthcare Centre again for the 2013 event. .
